Detroit cocktail bar has always had a reputation for shot-and-a-beer bars, but the city’s cocktail bar scene is a growing force. From the smallest distilleries to hidden speakeasy basement bars, these spots are serving up a variety of craft cocktails that rival the best in the country.
The Keep
Located in Downtown Detroit, this speakeasy features a secluded basement with exposed brick and low ceilings. The drinks menu includes nonalcoholic options like the Enigma (elderflower cordial, roasted peppercorn and amaro soda).
The Upright
A new addition to Oak & Reel in the Brush Park neighborhood, this bar serves a carefully curated cocktail menu that pays homage to classic drinks from decades past. It also offers hand crafted originals that can only be found here.
Raising the Bar: Detroit’s Top Cocktail Bars for Sipping in Style
Bar Pigalle
Among its many cocktail offerings, this restaurant and bar is known for its gin and tonics. The Seedlip gin is paired with elderflower tonic water and juniper, while the Bitter Autumn spritzer combines Dhos aperitif, verjus blanc, cinnamon and soda.
Tenacity Craft
This Virginia Park brewery has a dedicated following and serves up a wide selection of beers and Detroit-style pizza. Its minimal decor puts the focus on the brews and its own signature coffee, whiskey and gin.
Two James Spirits
Opened in late 2013, this small tasting room and bar set up has a large seasonal cocktail menu that highlights fresh ingredients to go with their own spirits. You can order a tasting flight to get an idea of what they have to offer, or you can ask the bartender to help you pick a drink based on your favorite spirits from the list.
